As a man who has spent considerably more than was wise on iPhone music apps and spent less time than was foreseen using them, the prospect of larger screen and faster processing for ‘music on the go’ is quite exciting.

Some of the applications I would love to use, such as Xewton Music Studio and Beatmaker would be great if they were just that little bit bigger. Also, the opportunities for acting as a MIDI controller/control surface is also very intriguing. Playing onscreen synths isn’t for everyone, but I admit to spending rather a long time working out ideas in my head on NLogSynth and Beatmaker and love the touch interaction used in Bebot. So I’m looking forward to new developments in this bigger music-audio touchey-feeley world.

A lot has been written in the last week about the ways the iPad will impact web designers, and the considerations we need to take into account. Here’s my concise summary and questions raised, of the discussion I’ve read so far:

1. We are going to need to design all link elements at a size large enough to be pressed with an average single, fat finger. (Could this lead to clunky looking designs?) What will be the optimum size for interface elements? It’s going to take some experimentation.

2. There are no hover states on touch screen tablets. Merely normal ‘up’ and ‘pressed’ states.

3. Screen orientation. Either we need to consider greater use of fluid layouts, or else Orientation Specific Content (as discussed here)

4. With a 1024X768 screen, we need to ensure we keep within this area, which is general good practice anyway.

5. No Flash. We can’t rely on Flash for a potentially large segment of our audience from now on. We need to move towards HTML5 solutions.

6. The version of Safari on the iPad will need thorough testing. Certain features such as fixed positioning may not be reliable. We have to wait and see.

7. Users of the iPad will crave simplicity. They will, afterall, be using a device which only has 1 single button on it’s front bezel. Will this will impact the way we approach our website and user experience design?
